Non-filers are subject to significantly higher withholding tax rates on banking transactions, vehicle registration, and property transfers compared to Active Taxpayers. FBR can also issue notices and impose penalties for non-filing where income is taxable.
Individual NTN registration through the IRIS portal is typically processed within 1-2 business days once documents and biometric verification are complete. Business NTN registration can take slightly longer depending on document verification.
You can check for free on the FBR website by entering your CNIC or NTN, or by sending your CNIC number via SMS to FBR's ATL-check service.
If your income sources are simple (e.g. a single salary), you can file yourself through IRIS. If you have multiple income sources, business income, foreign remittances, or prior filing issues, a consultant reduces the risk of errors that could trigger an FBR notice.
