An NTN (National Tax Number) is the starting point for any tax activity in Pakistan — you cannot file a return, register a business, or become an Active Taxpayer without one.
Who needs an NTN
Any individual earning taxable income, freelancers receiving foreign payments, and every registered business entity (sole proprietorship, partnership, or company) needs an NTN.
Documents required
- Valid CNIC
- Active mobile number registered in your name
- Personal email address
- Proof of business (for business NTN): utility bill, rental agreement, or ownership documents of business premises
- Bank account details
How registration works
NTN registration for individuals is done online through FBR's IRIS portal, using your CNIC and biometric verification. Business/partnership registration additionally requires a partnership deed or business proof and is generally best handled with guidance, since incorrect business classification at this stage can create compliance issues later.
After you register
Once your NTN is active, you can register for sales tax (if applicable to your business), open a business bank account, bid on government tenders, and file your annual tax return.
